The moment the car pulled up outside the small house and I’d finished reading the information San had discovered on Anise, my gut twisted. I knew this wasn’t even her place; from the information I held in front of me it said it belonged to her sister, Holly. My heart sank at how little I actually knew about the real Anise Collier. The rest had been locked up tight and the access unbreakable. At least her skills were in good shape. I didn’t know what to think. Why allow me to know she was here but not about her past?

Until it clicked; she didn’t want me to read it. She wanted my full attention. It made me think that taking my cards was just a rebellion act to ensure I’d not disappoint her and turn up here.

I wanted to know her plan and I hoped that the stark shock of me on her doorstep would make her see sense on what she’d done as I asked San to remain in the car.

No games. No agendas. It was just us.

I tried to ignore the rubbish that lined the path as I kicked it out of my way when I headed to the door. My gaze scoured the garden, if you could call it that as you could barely spot an area of green apart from weeds. I knocked on the cracked wooden door with the broken glass panel in the center and took in a huge breath awaiting her reaction to my arrival. I saw her approach with her hair pulled back tightly at the nape of her neck and her head held down low, ripped t-shirt and slashed jeans with one too many holes to be fashionable. I gulped as the hinges creaked loudly as the door opened and the weight shifted.

The moment she looked up and saw me, the dams broke, and tears cascaded down her cheeks.

“I . . .I’m . . .” she started but I stepped forward and ignored her attempts at words. I gathered her in my arms and squeezed her waist as her head lolled into the groove of my neck.

I peeped my gaze over her shoulder and whispered, “I’m here now, Honey. I’m here.”
